FAQs

What makes The Singing Athlete different from traditional voice lessons?

The world of brain-based voice training starts with your story. I want to know your history, what your body has been through, and what challenges you would like to resolve.

In addition to all the things a “normal” voice lesson would include, we will focus on clear physical and vocal assessments, and I will assign drills based on what we find.

The great thing is, your voice will tell us when we’re on the right track. Singing is a reflexive action mediated by your brain, so we’ll learn together in real time what type of stimulus your nervous system appreciates.

If you’d like to watch a video on how brain-based voice training is different, scroll down a bit on this page.

What qualities are you looking for in prospective students?

I look for students who are curious, coachable, and excited to explore what their voice can do — not just mechanically, but through the brain-body system that creates it.

I’m especially drawn to students who:

  • Are open-minded and willing to try new approaches

  • Enjoy learning about the voice, body, and nervous system

  • Ask thoughtful questions and take an active role in their progress

  • Value process just as much as results

  • Are willing to practice consistently and experiment

Is this only for professional/elite singers?

I primarily work with advanced and professional singers, but passionate developing singers are welcome to apply. If another teacher in my studio is the best fit for your growth, I’ll guide you there — we’ll make sure you’re supported at the right level.

Are lessons online, in-person, or hybrid?

I teach in person in NYC, Nashville, and LA, and I conduct lessons worldwide online on Zoom. And yes, a hybrid approach is absolutely possible.

Where do NYC lessons take place?

In New York, I teach in midtown, usually at 454 W 54th St (near 10th Ave.), but occasionally at a studio closeby.

Where do Nashville lessons take place?

Where do LA lessons take place?

The location for lessons in LA changes but is generally in a centrally-located spot. More details are provided at the time of booking.

How much do lessons cost?

How often do students typically train with you?

It varies — and it depends on your goals, schedule, and season of work.

Some students train weekly, especially when preparing for performances or building new patterns. Others work with me monthly or check in periodically when they need strategic guidance, tune-ups, or problem-solving support.

There isn’t one right frequency. My studio is designed to support you in the way that serves your development best — whether that means consistent weekly training or targeted sessions when you need high-impact work.

Do you offer packages or subscriptions?

I don’t offer lesson packages — private sessions are booked individually so we can build a training schedule that matches your goals and availability, rather than locking you into a fixed structure.

For singers who want ongoing support and self-paced training, I do offer The Singing Athlete Online Studio, which includes guided practice resources, drills, and additional learning. Many students use the online studio alongside their private sessions to accelerate progress.

How do payments work?

I accept several convenient forms of payment, including:

Once your lesson time is confirmed, you’re welcome to use whichever payment method is easiest for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your session. Cancellations made within 24 hours are charged the full lesson fee, as that time is reserved for you.

I understand that life and performing schedules can be unpredictable — if an emergency or sudden professional obligation arises, please let me know and we’ll handle it case-by-case.

What do I need to bring to a session?

Just a way to record your session (phone storage for audio or video is perfect) and any material you’d like to work on — such as sheet music or tracks. If we’re meeting online, a stable connection and a quiet space help you get the most from our work.

Do I need any equipment for online lessons?

All you need is a device with a camera, a quiet space, and enough room to move a bit. Most students use a laptop or phone and that works perfectly. A stable internet connection and space to record your session are helpful.

Before our session, make sure you know how to turn on Original Sound for Musicians in Zoom.
